Liam

Four weeks later…

“And that’s why I think we should scale back the Summer Traveling Library initiative to just these major metropolitan areas,” the young intern says, tapping on the map on the projector. He’s visibly nervous as he turns back towards us. “That would allow us to remain profitable, while still maintaining a key presence and our image as a company that prizes philanthropy.”

His head jerks in a sort of bow as he finishes, and each person around the table dutifully claps. It’s a key part of our internship program to pitch ideas at the end of it to an actual group of board members so that they have that experience under our belt. It’s a good way for them to see what the real world’s like, before they head out into a satellite office for more specialized learning. Normally I don’t attend these, but I happened to have some extra time. I like to see our interns; they come from some of the best universities in the country, and what better way to scout and retain talent than to have them under my nose, so I can see how they work?

Everyone seems to be pleased by him, but he notices the frown on my face and immediately his happy expression crumbles. I’m not disappointed by his presentation. Rather, I have a certain blonde’s voice in my head, admonishing me from cutting down on such a good program. Marissa might have a head for business, but she’s also a sucker for children. And a Traveling Library that would benefit rural children would definitely strike a chord with her. In fact, there’s no doubt in my mind that if she knew about this, she would beg to keep the program running, if not expand it. I could almost hear her voice asking me now.

I learned so much about this feisty, bold, and yet adorable blonde since she’s come back from boarding school. She is simultaneously so young and yet so mature. There are days when I’m absolutely fascinated by her, by how fast she connects the dots on business. Then she’ll do something like accidently burn the toast, and I’ll be reminded that in some ways, she still needs taking care of. And her smile, that innocent little smile that seems to be filled with pure joy. Like nothing bad in the world has touched her, despite all the tragedy in her life. It’s amazing to me how this young woman has been under my roof this whole time and yet it’s only now that I’m beginning to discover her.

The young intern clears his throat.

“Is there, is there something wrong with the presentation sir?” he asks.

“Not at all. However, we will not be moving ahead with cutting the program,” I say, setting my pen down. “In fact, we will be expanding it.”

I notice Andrew’s raised eyebrow, but I ignore it.

“It isn’t that your presentation wasn’t convincing. In fact, quite the opposite. But for Hart Enterprises, I think there are some things that are worth more than the bottom line.
